芝麻骨炎是一种导致跖骨痛或大拇趾关节球下方足部疼痛的疾病。它是趾骨受伤发炎的结果。芝麻状骨是位于第一跖骨下方的一对椭圆形骨头，在作为支点让肌腱（拇长屈肌）有效和高效地牵拉和弯曲我们的大脚趾方面起着至关重要的作用。
如果处理不当，芝麻骨炎可能导致芝麻骨应力性骨折、骨折甚至血管性坏死（"死亡"）。
Sesamoiditis is typically caused by acute trauma, repetitive trauma or overloading (excessive pressure), resulting in inflammation of the sesamoid bones and their surrounding tendons. Sesamoiditis most commonly affects the medial sesamoid, which is the sesamoid bone close to the inner side of the big toe joint. As it results in big toe joint pain, it is commonly confused with having a turf toe.
